Josh Balk is the outreach director of the “factory farming” campaign at HSUS, where he has worked since 2005. One of his jobs at HSUS is to encourage schools and corporations to stop buying regular eggs and switch to “cage-free” eggs.
Before going to HSUS, Balk worked at the vegan activist group Compassion Over Killing for three years, where he was an outreach coordinator promoting veganism to restaurants and conducting undercover investigations. Balk also has worked with international activists in Germany, Australia, and Canada.
At HSUS, Balk has continued his vegetarian evangelism, telling a crowd at an HSUS-sponsored conference in 2009: “It is needed for farm animals that we get people to eat more vegetarian meals… We just have to reduce the number of animals that are raised for food. And we can do so by encouraging people to eat more vegetarian meals.”
Balk names Jon Camp from the group Vegan Outreach as one of his heroes. Graduating from Radnor High School in Pennsylvania in 1998, he attended Keystone Junior College until 2000 before transferring to George Washington University.
