HumaneWatch is a serious attempt to provide some much-needed public oversight on the Humane Society of the United States. HSUS is the world's richest promoter of the philosophy that animals deserve legal "rights"—Including the right to not be eaten, the right to not be fished or hunted, and the right to sue you and me in court.

This humble blog has welcomed well over a half-million visitors since it launched three months ago. And the HumaneWatch Facebook group is already closing in on 42,000 fans. Feel free to ask questions of me directly, or air out your thoughts with the Facebook group. They're a friendly bunch—aside from the few trolls that HSUS sends in to make trouble.

Since you're new here, we've taken the liberty of putting together a "best of HumaneWatch" list so you can get up to speed quickly.

• It's sad but true: HSUS shares less than half of one percent of its budget with real "humane societies" and other hands-on pet shelters.
• Seventy-one percent of Americans believe HSUS is an umbrella group in charge of thousands of pet shelters, but that's completely untrue.
• HSUS consistently violates its own Articles of Incorporation by lobbying legislators and running a private school. (HSUS's own founding documents forbid both activities.)
• The respected nonprofit charity rating service Charity Navigator has officially downgraded HSUS to a level lower than the crazies at PETA. And the charity watchdog American Institute of Philanthropy gives HSUS a "C-minus" overall rating.
• If you're in California and a telemarketer calls on behalf of HSUS, more than 88 percent of your donation will line the pockets of that professional dialing-for-dollars company.
• The Ringling Brother circus is suing HSUS under the Mafia-oriented federal "RICO" law.
• HSUS's documented history is a blend of embezzlers, real-live Communists, and door-kicking law-enforcement impersonators.
• Even though the general public is disgusted by Michael Vick's horrendous treatment of animals, HSUS continues to use him as a spokesperson.
• An Atlanta investigative news crew has reported that HSUS may have re-routed millions of "Hurricane Katrina" dollars into programs that its donors didn't know they were supporting.

There's a wealth of information here about the Humane Society of the United States; this is just an appetizer. And HumaneWatch is here for the long haul—or at least until HSUS stops providing us with scandal after scandal after scandal.
