BREAKING: Pilot Travel Corp Drives Away From HSUS

Apparently, it took less than two days of intense, targeted social-media chatter for Pilot to see the writing on the wall. Pilot Travel Centers, the truck-stop and gas station chain, is no longer listed as a corporate partner on the Humane Society of the United States website. Unlike Yellow Tail wine, Pilot didn’t wait for international news stories to develop, consumers to revolt, and hunting rifles to make an appearance before throwing the stickshift in reverse.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Taking yourself off of a web page and changing your donation habits are two different things. Pilot hasn't yet contradicted its statement (posted Twitter and Facebook yesterday) indicating that its relationship with HSUS will continue (Update: see below.)

It's interesting to note that Yellow Tail is still listed as an HSUS sponsor, even though its leadership has pledged never to repeat their mistake. Here's hoping they follow Pilot's example.

We’re also waiting for final word We've just heard from Pilot Travel itself. Presuming the company is listening to its customers—and we hope they are—Hats off to 'em. Everyone should stop at a Pilot Center for a burger and a full tank of premium. Tell them HumaneWatch sent you.

P.S.: Who's next?

So the Haslam family Pilot Travel Centers backed one of the most anti-hunting groups in the US and now with Haslam running for Tennessee governor they don’t want to be listed as a corporate sponsor.

I’m going to contact PetSmart Charities next.
From their donor bill of rights:

“We respect your right to honest answers, whatever questions you may have. We promise to answer all your questions promptly and truthfully. We also promise to listen to what you have to say. Feel free to call us anytime at 1-800-423-PETS or email us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).”

They only promise to “listen” but let’s hope they will also act.

Probably hard to be seriously considered for the Republican candidate for Governor being a “Lifetime Member of the NRA” and a supporter of HSUS…...

“Probably hard to be seriously considered for the Republican candidate for Governor being a ‘Lifetime Member of the NRA’ and a supporter of HSUS…”

Certainly not hard if one is a hypocrite.

Bank of America?

They have checking and credit card accounts that send a percentage of transactions to HSUS as donations. I know local folks who got those accounts thinking they were donating to local shelters. Imagine their surprise when I filled them in…

I live 14 miles from a Pilot. I buy gas there and often just drive over for a cup of the best coffee ever, When I saw their name as corporate sponsor of HSUS I said never again. Thank you everyone who pitched in,I can now enjoy my coffee and not feel guilty about enjoying it, just knowing 1 cent doesn’t go to HSUS makes life more enjoyable.
Humane watch, keep up the good work and full speed ahead.

If you call the PetCo customer relations number you get a call center in the Philippines and someone who can barely speak English.  Plus their wait music is some Middle Eastern tune and very hard to listen to.  Asked to speak to a supervisor or someone else who spoke English and was told that they were all busy and would call me back in 1/2 hour.  Let’s see if that happens.  The person I spoke to didn’t have a clue who HSUS was and kept calling them the humane society.  I did set him straight before I hung up.

I also wrote to the email address for PetCo and will see what transpires from that.
