HSUS Offices now “Littered” with Former Corporate Supporters
It's said good things happened "in threes." (Or was that celebrity deaths?) First came Yellow Tail Wine, then Pilot Travel Centers. And now a third company has withdrawn its corporate support for the Humane Society of the United States in the space of just a few weeks.
The last time a $100 million colossus took on this much water, Molly Brown found herself a lifeboat.
Meet Precious Cat, Inc. The cat litter company has been listed on HSUS's "corporate supporters" page for quite a long time, helping HSUS' "shelter partners program" by donating free products. That's going to stop.
Here's a statement that Precious Cat released a short time ago:
Precious Cat, Inc. has withdrawn it’s sponsorship of the Humane Society of the United States Shelter Partner Program. However, Precious Cat will still continue to support shelters by providing them with free Shelter Kits.
The Shelter Kits contain Cat Attract™ Litter Additive, free coupons for our cat litter products and Litter Box Solutions Booklets. These kits are to be used for cats being surrendered to shelters or for cats in the shelter with inappropriate elimination behaviors. Inappropriate elimination is the number one behavioral reason cats are abused, abandoned, and put in shelters. Precious Cat is dedicated to maintaining a happy, healthy life for all cats. Shelters can order kits by going to our website at www.preciouscat.com and clicking on the shelter page.
We think it's important that the company is continuing to donate its product to hands-on cat shelters, by the way. And we hope cat-owning HumaneWatchers will show Precious Cat some (appropriate) customer love.

Way to go Precious Cat! It’s about time that corporate sponsors realize what the HSUS is up to. Thank you from another professional who actually cares about our animals well being!
Precious Cat:
Thanks for the wake up call. HSUS is wrongly abusing their “tax exempt, non-profit, charitable status” for excessive lobbying and politicing efforts to regulate legitimate animal breeders, and hunters out of business. (HSUS is neither non-profit nor charitable.) They care little to nothing about animal welfare and adoption. Thanks for your continued furnishing of the “free shelter kits”
A at Owner.
I’ve also noticed PetValue in that list of supporters. I find this quite curious that these companies would allow themselves to be fished in. Notwithstanding the other problems HSUS has it seems, by it’s own policy statements, working directly at odds with any pet suppliers business purposes.
From HSUS website:
“The HSUS opposes the sale of dogs, cats, and other animals through pet stores and other commercial operations. In such situations, the desire for profit undermines proper care, seriously compromising the welfare of the animals….”
This statement means that any method that would provide pets to a large market is something they are against. Small boutique breeders would be classified as other commercial ventures and certainly would never be able to support the size of the industry companies like PetValue rely on. This would be especially true if the various bills HSUS sponsors, to limit the number of dogs any one breeder can have, gets passed. By sending funds or product to HSUS they are funding an organization working directly at odds with their profit margins. Precious Cat would have been doing the same. If I was a shareholder in any of these companies and knew that they were doing that I’d be looking to replace the board.
YAHOOO It’s a shame you can’t year me pounding and laughing as I yell that!!...great JOB <G> David!!
Crap I got the wrong company. PetSmart not Petvalue. Lol
David how do I edit my comment?
We must go after EVERY corporate sponsor. It is time to bleed HSUS dry.
The whole “Shelter Partners” program, like “Foreclosure Pets” and “Spay Day” is meant to encourage the misperception that HSUS provides funding to local shelters.
I got a fundraising letter in 2008 asking me to renew my membership (my last donation was 13 years ago) and the #1 reason cited was to help HSUS run a program that provides local shelters with supplies, including FREE FOOD. Actually, Hills Science Diet’s Shelter Nutrition Program does that, as do other pet food companies. HSUS just helps Hills recruit shelters for the program.
Keep up the amazing work and maybe the Humane Society will actually end up with financial constraints.
we don’t have a cat, but I’ll happily buy some product this week and donate to a local group to support Precious Cat’s wise decision!
Wonderful to see people uniting for a common cause. I will not knowingly do business with any corporate sponsor of HSUS and will castigate anyone who shills for them. Why don’t we have a listing of celebs that support HSUS.
Always remember, your local shelter is lots closer than some corporate office in Washington. And, if you do not want to donate cash, call your shelter and ask what donations are needed.. Or the next time you are out and about, pick up a couple of bags of cat or dog food and drop them off at your local shelter.Feel good about your self, help a critter in need.
I too am disgusted and losing trust in a lot of orgs that take contributions. I’m constantly hearing about the fraud going on but I was greatly disheartened to hear that this supposed “animal rights” org is only out to pad their pockets. They didn’t give to Hurricane Katrina like they were supposed to and made a LOT of $ off that deal; The head of it, W.P. hires all his ATTORNEY friends (living high lifestyles) and NOT people w/ education and experience in animal welfare, care and agriculture.
They’re experts all right! Experts in taking advantage of animal lovers, espec. the elderly and if they had their way, they’d do away w/ dog shows too—- and call them “animal slaves”—- YET, they seem to get a lot of money & appeal to these same people….I will NEVER again give to them and now that I found out my local Humane Society is NOT part of HSUS, I will give double to them!!
Pathetic crooks is all they are, hiding behind their fancy cars & not truly understanding population control and how to actually GIVE the $ people donated, to the correct cause.
Ojymo. Right on. The only welfare W>P> is concerned about is his 401 k and lineing the pockets of those who think his way.But isnt it a kick in the ass when so many people request an investigation from the IRS and get no action and these people are allowed to exploit animal lovers on TV daily?

I’ll bet an enterprising someone can come up with the rest of that corporate list! Good work as always, David!
