One Brave Voice

The relationship between the super-rich Humane Society of the United States and the thousands of (often very poor) U.S. pet shelters is the stuff of legend in the animal rights movement. We’ve heard stories about HSUS using its checkbook as both carrot and stick, and a large number of pet sheltering professionals—the folks who do all the heavy lifting—have come to resent it.

One such shelter director from the American Midwest wrote us on Friday, daring to pour her frustrations into her keyboard.

We’re sharing this letter with her permission, but without her name.

As a small shelter we bear the name "Humane Society" as the [name withheld] Humane Society. People automatically think we get some of these funds when we do not. We have had our name for over 20 years. We are not able to speak out vocally as we would like, but I do find some very eye opening things on your site. We have never received a penny from HSUS and we dealt with some issues with them during a flood.

I do not want to speak publicly but would like to commend you for some of your insights. You can publish the email if I am not identified. That is why I finally wrote you.

We struggle as a Humane Society and people think we get big dollars. We get nothing, not even food, vaccinations, heartworm tests, nothing. It is frustrating. I guess you can understand why I do not want to be identified. I am even afraid to "like" you on Facebook for retaliation.

Retaliation? It’s clear to most observers that HSUS runs a very small network of “preferred” shelters that it favors with glowing media attention and cash donations. But it’s harder to imagine what “retaliation” against dissident puppy and kitten caregivers might consist of.

Perhaps this shelter director is concerned about reputation-ruining negative press. Or a phonied-up law enforcement raid, supervised by HSUS itself. Or any number of other distractions that could focus her attention somewhere other than adopting out dogs and cats. Whatever her concerns are, we’ll keep her identity a secret. And if any of her colleagues out there want to follow suit, you know where to reach us.

Sounds like HSUS is big brother of the animal rights movement - don’t dare cross them. Which is beginning to sound like our entire lifes existence. we are going to hell in a box car -
Humanewatch is a ray of hope.

Well I have stopped giving money to the Girl Scouts cookie fiasco operation as well.  Now I will write out a check directly to a specific Girl Scout troop that knocks on my door.  This way the girls get 100% of the money right into their own troop checking account.

I am very sad to learn that such a small amount of money gets to our local shelter.  Wish the local place would just let us write checks directly to them…....people should learn to do this instead!

AND—I applaud the person who sent humanewatch this message.  Without people like this we will not be able to take any steps forwards.  Thank you so much for stepping up to the plate !!

This is the first I have heard this about the Humane Society of the US. Thanks for the heads-up.

so terribly sad the things that these people and these animals have to go through. I hope that they know they are heroes anyway!

Love to help or work with animals.  Right now unable to adopt but preparing to soon. Relocating and don’t wish to put an animal though that. I think people are apt to help animals sometimes before people. Why, they won’t steal, do drugs and abuse when help is offered.  We need to find senior who are alone and help them have reason to get up each day, reason to take walks etc. A friend is someone for them to talk to when know one else is around.  Any input, I’m here.  Ready and willing to help our 4-footed friends…

I REALLY don’t care for kids like I do animals.  I so agree that they can be your best friend…..give you a reason to get up and take that walk, etc.  Not having any human kids, because I chose that, dogs are my KIDS.  They should be treated like the spoiled bratty kids do.  I would SO rather give food to a stray dog than a kid who’s parents had no business having them in the first place.  I so wish that the part of my tax dollars that go to public school system, go to dogs/cats well being instead, since I have no kids.  I’m so tired about hearing the crisist with the school system.  How bout we talk about the animals that are in need of homes?  How bout we talk about spay and neuter with teenage kids too?  It’s just so sad to see that people can’t take their animals when they move.  How bout getting a place that allows pets?  They don’t have any places that don’t allow kids.  I just don’t get it.

Deena ....you sound like a very bitter, jaded individual. In your case, I don’t think animals OR children are the real issue…..

Every charity needs a good watchdog.  However, I’m not convinced that HumaneWatch is doing this in the best interest of animal protection.  IF the HSUS is involved in the misappropriation of funds that they collected as donations from those of us who really would like to help protect animals from assassination and extinction, then they indeed must called out for it.  However, be prepared to prove any allegations that you make!  Quoting internet sources of those who are fighting to keep their “rights” as breeder’s or hunters or whatever, is not proof.  Spouting on a website that there is something amiss is not fact, just an opinion.  Having said that, apparently HSUS is posting IRS forms and financial statements on their website.  Is there proof that these statements are correct and not doctored?  Is there proof that funds either are, or are not, going to the places that the HSUS says they are?  Also in question would be a letter written by an anonymous source, posted by yet another source.  It could be that it is nothing more than a disgruntled employee getting back in a very public way?  The internet was meant to be a source of information to the general public.  Although it certainly can be, common sense must tell you that anyone can post anything on the internet (unfortunately) much of which is misinformation or maliciousness.

HSUS is a very large, albeit rich, organization that fights for the welfare of ALL animals.  As humans we take what we want unknowing, or uncaring, of the consequences it has, and will continue to cause, to our natural world and its inhabitants.  Animals don’t have a voice that we understand.  They cannot tell you when they are hurting or decreasing in numbers due to the loss of their habitat, or being killed for something that a human “must have”.  People somehow always end up deciding their fate.  Whether that is allowing hunters to shoot for meat, fur, a supposed medicinal value to humans or just sport; or breeder’s who continue to over breed, inbreed, crossbreed, etc.  Humans are making choices for animals, taking natural selection out of the equation.

To wrap up, I am only asking for two things; show me proof of right or wrong and, use common sense when you read stuff on the internet.
