Questions for Wayne Pacelle About “The Bond”
Yesterday Humane Society of the United States CEO Wayne Pacelle began an 11-state PR tour to promote his new book The Bond. It’s curious that Pacelle chose to write about the “human-animal bond,” considering his own observation that he has no special bond with animals.
Pacelle told author Ted Kerasote for the 1994 book Bloodties: Nature, Culture, and the Hunt: “I don't have a hands-on fondness for animals. I did not grow up bonded to any particular nonhuman animal. I like them and I pet them and I'm kind to them, but there's no special bond between me and other animals."
Was that just a younger Pacelle whose views have since matured or evolved? It’s hard to say.
This is just the first of many unresolved questions that Pacelle, as a self-anointed supreme arbiter of what is and isn’t “humane,” should answer for the public. Luckily, the coming weeks will offer many opportunities (those book-signings) to ask him what he believes. Of course, there’s no guarantee that he’ll answer.
If you’re not sure what exactly to ask after Wayne is through reading aloud about “the humane economy,” we have a few suggestions:
- People have been raising and eating animals for thousands of years. Isn’t the nourishment that animals provide to people part of the human-animal bond? If not, why not?
- The vast majority of Americans currently reject your prescription to “replace animal products with plant-based foods.” Is it arrogant of you to tell them all that they’re wrong?
- If the bond between people and animals is easily visible through our relationship with pets, why don’t you direct HSUS to give more money to pet shelters to rehabilitate and adopt-out dogs and cats? Wouldn’t that help bolster “the bond”?
- Given the blowback you’ve received for public partnership with Michael Vick, would you think twice about rehabilitating another convicted dogfighting kingpin?
- Is there such a thing as meat that’s “humane” enough that your ethics permit you personally to eat it? If so, where can we buy some? If not, what’s the difference between your group and PETA?
Below are the cities that Pacelle will visit on his book tour. (Not surprisingly, Nebraskans don’t get an audience.) If you’re in the area, we encourage you to stop by and ask him some tough questions. (For more on specific locations, click here.)
If you do ask Pacelle a question, please tell us about it. If you want to record it on a cell-phone camera and put it on YouTube, all the more power to you. Just make sure first that it’s OK to record it, of course.

Mr Pacelle,
I live in a suburb of Philly and am no longer a fan of the “Eagles” since Vick signed with your blessing…As far as I am concerned you and the organization you represent, are a sellout to all animals lovers everywhere…You totally disgust me..What I find most interesting is that you never mentioned the $50,000 you received from the “Eagles”..Why is that?? Is it because it was nothing more than a payoff??? It’s really sad that because of your actions, I will never send ANYTHING to your “supposed” Humane Society.. You CANNOT change someone who is hardwired like that..But, what do you care as long as the money comes in….You, sir, need to resign as CEO of the Humane Society and maybe then they can get someone who REALLY cares about animals..
Interestingly, the issue of whether filming is permitted or not is not usually something that stops the protest industry flacks.
One of their usual tricks is to use hidden cameras even in public places where there was no ban on filming. The resulting footage automatically makes anything and anyone look suspect.
Funny how all these animal “heroes” all wind up flogging their auto-biographies. Animals aren’t just a cushy salary and pension to these hucksters, it’s personal branding.
I have one question, myself, for Wayne Pacelle: why do you take your TV ads claiming that you’re in support of pets, and lobby for legislation and propaganda that proves otherwise, especially in the context of increasingly popular pet reptiles? Are you really that desperate for an Animal Rights dystopia without any animal interaction to bully people who own a pet that is not a cat or dog, even if a harmless one?
From all I have read about Pacelle - he is totally unsuitable for the role he is playing. Animals need someone who really care and are able to bond with them. Animals know the difference between tolerance and commitment. I have never met a true animal lover who wasn’t passionate and protective. Pacelle just doesn’t fit.
Mr. Pacelle,
Why do you use the name ‘Humane Societies of the United States’ when you are not affiliated with any actual Humane Society rescue shelters?
Why is it that cats and dogs can be part of ‘the bond’ but not reptiles, snakes, or other exotic pets?
Why is it that you can speak of an animal-human bond when you have been quoted to say,
“I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals. I did not grow up bonded to any particular nonhuman animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” in 1994. You have also been quoted to say,
“If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don’t want to see another dog or cat born.” in 1993. Also quoted in 1993 was this.
“One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals.”
Is it fair that you, a person who has been quoted to say that you don’t have a bond with an animal and would rather see them all become extinct, should be able to teach us, the regular people of the United States, about the bond between us and our animals?
Doesn’t a farmer have the same bond with his animals as he goes out in the middle of the night to check on them or risk his life in the middle of a blizzard to save a single calf because he knows the mother is due, that a child does to the family pet? Doesn’t the farmer deserve to continue this bond without interference from any organization that has employees who state: “My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.”—-JP Goodwin, employed at the Humane Society of the US, 1996?
You talk about ‘the bond’ between an human and a pet, yet your words speak louder than your actions.“Micheal Vick would do a good job as a pet owner.” You support Micheal Vick, a man charged with 8 cases of animal cruelty, which he plead not guilty to until his plea bargain that reduces his crime to merely racketeering. You write of the human animal bond but you support Micheal Vick owning a pet after what he had done. Why is that?
That’s all I got right now.
I notice Wayne isn’t stopping anywhere there might be someone in the audience who disagrees with him. Imagine that…
I have 2 questions I wish someone would ask:
Why, Mr Pacelle, are you using HSUS funds and resources to help promote your book, funds that could go to the DIRECT help of LOCAL animal shelters?
How much of the proceeds from your book are you going to personally use to help, at a hands on level, pet shelters, pet rescues, pet owner awareness, and individuals in need of assistance spaying and/or neutering their pets?
Thank you,
Virginia
No, no maturation or involvement - check out his video on the book’s Amazon page - he says, “I’ve ALWAYS had a bond with animals.” Guess he can’t remember back to the early 1990s.
Pacelle told author Ted Kerasote for the 1994 book Bloodties: Nature, Culture, and the Hunt: “I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals. I did not grow up bonded to any particular nonhuman animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.”
Puts a whole different spin on the book with the quote above in mind. I’m disappointed; perhaps I won’t read the book after all.
Pacelle’s sell-out on Michael Vick was inexcusable. Blood money.
I can’t believe anyone would buy your book! Why don’t you and Vick go find you a deserted island somewhere that has no animals anywhere. You would make a good couple!
just anecdotal observations. EVERY H.S. shelter i’ve been in, (and I’ve been in a lot!) without exception, the majority of kennels are empty and there’s dozens of staff. (perhaps mostly volunteers, bless them) but the H.S. makes it clear that they will take only healthy surrendered “adoptable” dogs. ANYBODY CAN DO THAT! What little they accomplish, I applaud; but I’m intelligent enough to know that if I’m being bombarded with fundraising materials—it aint going to the dogs!
I will be doing an interveiw with Mr. Pacelle today (04-11-2011). I will ask a few of the questions. The show will air on http://www.sonomasunfm.com Saturday April 16th from 12-1 pst (aka: California time.)
Question asked….The vast majority of Americans currently reject your prescription to “replace animal products with plant-based foods.” Is it arrogant of you to tell them all that they’re wrong?..& was answered…
Question ASKED…How much of the proceeds from your book are you going to personally use to help, at a hands on level, pet shelters, pet rescues, pet owner awareness, and individuals in need of assistance spaying and/or neutering their pets? & WAS Answered…
I forgot to say that I also asked Wayne about,
“I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals. I did not grow up bonded to any particular nonhuman animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” You can hear the full interview at http://www.sonomasunfm.com on Saturday from 12-1 pm PST.

You forgot one question I’d like the answer to:
If your organization is so concerned about animals, why is it that you dump animals you rescue into [underfunded and overcrowded] kill shelters?
I’d sure like to hear the answer to that one.
