The Hill’s Are Alive with the Sound of HSUS
FINAL UPDATE: As of 1:45pm EDT on March 18, Hill's is no longer financially sponsoring HSUS. The company has issued a statement via e-mail, and it's a wonderful day for the animal kingdom.
It's one thing when a wine company from Australia trips over itself and pledges a six-figure check to what's already America's richest animal rights group. Or when a truck-stop company passes the hats for the nation's largest anti-meat, anti-circus, anti-hunting, and anti-(fill in the blank here) organization.
Who would expect them to understand the internal politics of the animal protection movement? By all rights, we should thank them for "walking it back" and wish them well.
But Hill's, the company behind the popular "Science Diet" brand of pet food, is a different matter entirely. Today we learned that the company is sponsoring a "click to give" Internet program that directly benefits the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). You click on the cute doggie, and Hill's donates to HSUS:
Your free click generates a donation from Hill's Pet Nutrition to support the HSUS. You may click once a day, every day. 100% of the donations raised go directly to The HSUS, which advocates for local humane societies and operates its own network of animal sanctuaries ...
The mind boggles. How exactly does HSUS "advocate for" local humane societies? By charging them money? By not sharing very much of its 9-figure bank account?
Veterinarians tell us that they're the core target market for Hill's marketers. And we're hyper-aware that HSUS has basically gone to war with the veterinary "establishment," trying to recruit vets into its own "Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association." (That's the same group that used to be called the Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights before it merged with HSUS.)
Suffice it to say that we believe most U.S. veterinarians see HSUS as something between a nuisance and The Enemy. Perhaps the Hill's marketing geniuses didn't think this one through. But as always, we have great faith in the ability of this audience to help them understand what's what.
Click here to visit the Hill's "contact us" web page. I hope you'll let me know (either here or on the HumaneWatch Facebook page) if you've made contact with the company.
Note: We've updated our parody of the Hill's logo to remove their name.

This is what I wrote to them (I don’t actually support any Hill’s product - but they don’t know that).

I have been a science diet customer for years, but based on the fact that Hill’s not only donates to the HSUS, but encourages others to do so has moved me to discontinue my loyalty.
The HSUS only recently began providing direct care for animals after being scrutinized for years for not doing so. And they didn’t build shelters to do it, they acquired another organization. Interestingly, NONE of the shelters care for cats or dogs - the owners of which are your bread and butter.
Some other facts:
In 2008, the HSUS raised 87 million dollars
37% of every dollar donated to the HSUS went to paying salaries of their employees
40% of every dollar donated went to advertising and programs to RAISE MORE MONEY
.5% (half of one percent) of every dollar raised actually goes to a shelter in need of care - and ONLY in disaster situations.
So if Hill’s raises $200,000 dollars and donates it to The HSUS, $74,000 will go into the pockets of the employees. $80,000 will fund MORE advertising like TV commercials picturing cats and dogs (which they don’t take care of), and only $10,000 will go to animal shelters.
All of this information can be verified by simply looking at the 2008 IRS form 990 on their website, here’s a link:
http://www.humanesociety.org/assets/pdfs/financials/form_990_2008.pdf
The majority of the rest of the money goes towards lobbying against cat and dog breeders, pet owners, etc.., and towards lawsuits aimed at making business so expensive, that organizations have to go bankrupt.
Unless Hill’s IMMEDIATELY ceases to support the HSUS, I will never purchase another Hill’s product again.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Brady
actually, it’s $1,000 of 200,000 that would go to shelters, I sent an amended email…
OOPS! Don’t want to give The HSUS too much credit
I also sent them a comment and basically stated that I though it was interesting that they were choosing to be put out of business by H$U$ in doing their donations.
I also stated I would no longer feed my dogs any HIll’s product. I’m a breeder, so they used to get a lot of my money, not anymore!
I find the new strategy in marketing disappointing and will reconsider suggesting this to clients. Thanks.
I have fed Hills Science Diet to my dogs for the last 10 years and have been an avid supporter promoting their products to my friends, family, and even my veterinarian! What a disappointment that they are supporting HSUS!! I filled out their comment sheet and filled out the survey as well.
I just sent this message to Hill’s:
I am shocked to learn of your new promotional campaign here:
http://www.care2.com/click-to-donate/pets/
What on earth are you thinking? Do you know that only one-half of one percent of all donations to HSUS go to animal care? Don’t believe me… look here:
http://www.humanesociety.org/assets/pdfs/financials/form_990_2008.pdf
this is the HSUS 2008 income tax return.
Additionally, HSUS stated agenda is the elimination of all animals as pets. Do you really want to support such an organization as this?
I hope this is all just a terrible mistake. It is quite understandable that the HSUS has deceived you as they have done to millions of Americans.
I respectfully ask you to reconsider your decision to support the HSUS.

Interestingly, if you follow the link to the site, it no longer makes any mention of Hill’s. It now states:
“Your free click generates donations from our sponsors. You may click once a day, every day. 100% of the donations raised go directly to The HSUS, which advocates for local humane societies and operates its own network of animal sanctuaries, providing care and homes to more animals than any other national animal protection organization in the United States.”
It is not clear who is actually sponsoring the donations. I think the website http://www.care2.com also needs a bit of education!
Jonathan- Your interest in supporting HumaneWatch’s efforts is commendable. However, I don’t feel it’s necessary to stoop to HSUS’s tactics to get your point across to Hill’s. Let’s keep the fight HONEST,please. Don’t claim to use their products, and then threaten to stop, it just ain’t kosher!
Thanks for the heads up on Hills and HSUS. Yes, I sent them my note of disappointment and made sure to mention that I will be discussing this program with my veterinarian.
I asked why Hills would support an organization that is opposed to dog ownership and also to the consumption of meat. I also asked why they would support an organization that uses a fraction of its donations for animals that they confiscate, sell or surrender to other shelters not owned by them, and even will argue in superior courts that 4 week old pit bull puppies confiscated or born after a dog fighting raid should just be euthanized for the sheer reason that they were born. Doesn’t sound like a very humane organization to me and wondered why Hills thought otherwise.
As of 9:21pm CDT, the Hills Science Diet logo appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen, where earlier the HSUS logo was located. The logo is a link to http://www.hillspet.com/
And yes, I have screen shots of both the earlier and the current view!
So it appears either Hills or 2Care think we are easy to fool with a bit of screen changes.
I also sent this message to Care2.com:
To Whom It May Concern:
I am very disappointed to learn that your website features advertisements from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), here:
http://www.care2.com/click-to-donate/pets/learn-more
In my opinion, the HSUS is a deceitful organization which preys upon the good will of millions of Americans, even in times of crisis such as Hurricane Katrina, to solicit badly needed donations for pets which never make it to the majority of animals they claim to be helping.
Did you know that only one-half of one percent - yes, that’s only $1 out of every $200 - of the donations that go to HSUS actually is used in helping animals? The rest goes into salaries, pension funds, and more fund raising. Don’t believe me… look here:
http://www.humanesociety.org/assets/pdfs/financials/form_990_2008.pdf
this is the HSUS 2008 income tax return.
I truly believe that the HSUS fits into the the following category:
“One of our most important commitments to our members is to not allow deceptive advertising or harmful products on our site.” Source: http://www.care2.com/aboutus/ads.html
For more information on the HSUS, please visit:
http://activistcash.com/organization_overview.cfm/o/136-humane-society-of-the-united-states
I hope you will look into this matter and conclude with me that the HSUS does not deserve your support.
Best regards,
Web Wheeler
I emailed Hill’s 3-14 and told them ‘for hame’. I also called my Vet and asked that she pull Hill’s from her shelves….IMHO the dogs fed Hill’s are smelly - either it’s the dog food or the disease….........
Keep up the good work
Mary Verbeck Pomeroy
Thanks for all of your hard work. Do keep it up up. Organizations like peta and hsus need to be shut down or at the very least exposed for the frauds they are. I just wrote Hills concerning their contributions to hsus asking them to cease that part of their program but urging them to continue to give to individual independent local shelters and thanking them for doing so.
So moving right along…now we go after Rogers coffee and tea RIGHT?????
Mary Verbeck Pomeroy
I sent them a note asking them to reply - told them I would be addressing their support of H$U$ with the Practice Owner at our clinic, and that this would probably result in Hill’s being removed from our shelves..explained how it was our policy to educate our clients about threats to their animals and we considered H$U$ to be a major player in the animal rights arena - will let you know if I hear from them!

There is already a large group of us spreading the word on Facebook. I also have sent my own comment to them on their “contact us” page , And I wonder where they think their future customer base is when H$U$ reaches that ultimate unthinkable goal.
