What’s a Zoophile?
We know we’re having an impact in educating Americans about the deception of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS, which isn’t affiliated with your local humane society or pet shelter). How? First, we have a robust and steadily growing Facebook fan base that just surpassed 350,000 people. Second, HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle can’t seem to stop writing about us. (As a rule of thumb, “If they’re not complaining you’re probably not making a difference.”)
And by “writing about us,” we don’t mean loving missives. It’s more like increasingly rabid posts on his blog, ranging from false claims that we support animal cruelty (the new “race card”) to more recently the defamatory notion that our executive director wants to corrupt schoolchildren. Yeah—he went there.
But there’s one that really takes the cake in which Pacelle tries to demonize the Facebook fans of HumaneWatch. He writes:
[HumaneWatch is] actually just a gathering place for dogfighters, cockfighters, puppy millers, sealers, trophy hunters, factory farmers, furriers, keepers of exotic wildlife as pets, and zoophiles, among others.
What’s a zoophile? At first blush, we assumed Pacelle means people who enjoy zoos. Boy, were we wrong. Basically, it’s someone who has sex with animals. Yes, that’s how HSUS’s CEO expresses his obvious frustration with criticism.
We know it’s not true—we hear from animal lovers and shelter volunteers every day on our Facebook page. But “truth” apparently doesn’t enter Mr. Pacelle’s orbit very often—which is odd, because you’d think his huge ego would have the gravitational pull of the Sun. But that’s neither here nor there.
Frankly, we’re baffled at how he got that zoophilia idea. And it’s ironic that Pacelle calls us a gathering place for dogfighters—after all, Wayne Pacelle is the one on the rehabilitation mission for convicted dogfighting kingpin Michael Vick, and who said Vick “would do a good job as a pet owner” (after the Eagles paid HSUS a $50,000 “grant,” no less). Gee, how has that worked out?
It’s clear to us that HSUS is frightened by our success—your success, really—in educating Americans about HSUS’s deceptiveness and the need to give to local pet shelters (since HSUS generally doesn’t).
But c’mon, HSUS, are you too chicken to debate on the merits of how you spend all that money?

Perhaps HumaneWatchers should launch a class action libel suit against Mr. Pacelle. He’d have something to complain about then!
I would just like to clear up that a zoophile is NOT someone who has sex with animals; they have an emotional connection [or love, if you will] with them on par with humans, that may or may not be sexual.
Keep up the good work. Obviously we are getting to Pacelle and slowing down his money flow. He is not use to anyone questioning him. His kingdom is starting to collapse. Keep pushing!!
I would like to hear more about how humane watch would like to see the money spent. It is pathetic that so many animals are put down, and as I needed to give up a stray cat at the directive of a new building owner, I was told at the APF shelter that they were putting down even healthy animals because they were overcrowded, and they asked for a donation to assist in this too. I am disgusted. How about building some more animal shelters? Paying workers to take care of animals, buying property where animals can be taken care of, and maybe even educating the public more on the crisis of the overpopulation of animals which is leading to all of this genocide of pets that are lost or cannot be taken care of in their homes any longer, and lose homes, and their caretakers. I still think that some of this money could go toward setting up a fund for those who can’t afford the medical bills but are able to still house the animal. How about a medicaid program for animals?
There’s a few ideas. Thank you for your work to bring this horrific problem out into the open, and your support of making sure the money we donate is being used in the way that we would like to see the money used.
A favored internet expression amongst my generation comes to mind here: butthurt.
Definition: An inappropriately strong negative emotional response from a perceived personal insult. Characterized by strong feelings of shame. Frequently associated with a cessation of communication and overt hostility towards the “aggressor.”
(urbandictionary.com)
Wayne Pacelle is butthurt.
Pacelle is projecting his own organization’s shortcomings again. As to the animal cruelty charge, please see http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=7304, and for the corruption of school children, please see http://humanesociety.org/news/magazines/kind_news/.
O . . . . M . . . . G
This is really the highlight of a terrible week, made me all shivery inside to hear how threatened Wayne feels. I wonder how much lower he can go than to accuse your readers of enjoying sex with animals. I could make a joke here about the twisted logic of Animal Rights philosophy, but I’m sure many of you could do even better in your own minds. (thinking of the ‘rat is a dog is a boy’, take it from there, people)
There are several things in his blog that your geniuses at HumaneWatch can use for blog topics for months to come, what a trap he has set for himself. Go that low, and the gloves are off.
Keep up the good work. I’m going to Facebook now to chat with the GREAT people there, who actually care about animals, have respect for them, honor them and primarily honor the people who devote their lives to helping them. 350,000 FB friends is a powerful force.
I was a donor until i did some searching on different sites. I was really mad when i found out they didnt help local any local shelters.how sad they lie to the people about it.take patrick they fixed her then killed her instead of giving her to a rescue group. I have told many people about hsus and they dont donate anymore. thank you humanewatch.
dogfighter? nope.
cockfighter? nope.
puppy miller? nope, not a breeder.
sealer? nope.
trophy hunter? nope, not a hunter.
factory farmer? nope, not on my little acre.
furrier? nope, don’t even own a fur.
keeper of exotic wildlife as pets? nope, I have two dogs.
zoophile? nope, blush.
other? Ah, here I am with the rest of the 99% who just love our pets.
I wanted to like you again but I already liked you.
Is there any further investigation of the Ohio incident? They seem to have concluded suicide awfully quickly for someone who was found 50 feet away from the gun (and wire cutters.) That whole thing has really bothered me.
What a gift! It is both frightening and enlightening to see just how twisted a mind is at the helm of the huge and supposedly compassionate monolith that is the HSUS. I don’t do FB - I hope those who have seen this diatribe have been explaining to others just what Pacelle has said. It should go a long way toward helping them understand just how rational and credible he is. NOT!!
Makes me wonder if he will soon be announcing that HSUS is proud to add the utterly discredited
DVM Melinda Merck to its staff. No, I haven’t heard anything to suggest that will happen, it just seems like she would be a good fit since she and Pacelle think so much alike.
Friends of animal agriculture need to remember that the truth about HSUS is its greatest enemy. The truth is “H$U$ wants to shut down all animal agriculture including those raised for food, service and companionship. H$U$ wants to take the meat off the American table and destroy our economy and nation from within.
@ Samantha - Yes, but when has Wayne EVER used a term in any way but the most extreme? In this context, I don’t doubt for a minute he meant it in the most extreme sense.
And I wonder where he could have gotten an idea like that?
In my observation, people tend to project their own character faults on others .. hmmm ...
Judging by Wayno’s vitriolic lies, it makes you wonder if he’s running with a full string of lights. Keep up the good work, Humanewatch. It would be a boon to animal lovers to see this money-sucking bohemoth toppled.
The same kind of childish insult you used to hear in school. If you “like” or “love” someone you must be having sex with them. The class bullies would use that to stigmatize a developing relationship. This tells you how Wayne thinks.
Yes, Tom, they are bullies. In fact, you can pretty reliably tell the deeply indoctrinated from the casually misinformed on public forums by the speed of their devolution into verbal abuse when challenged in any way.
This was something I didn’t realize about them until I began posting to public forums where these issues are discussed. The position is an ignorant one, by nature, but try however courteously to insert fact into the discussion, however well documented, and you will be truly amazed at the slanderous vitriol it triggers. So I’m not surprised at this, though Pacelle is usually a *little* more restrained! lol!
Even so, it’s really just embroidery on the basic emotional blackmail they use to get people on their side who are natural opponents to the agenda. What animal lover is willing to be lumped in with ‘animal abusers’? And the AR challenge that if you don’t support them, you must be a ‘supporter of animal abuse’ is pretty hard to resist.
Going over his blog, I think he must have gone in and done some judicial editing, so I hope HW has screen shots of this. I’m pretty sure his blog has been sanitized .. and I’d LOVE a screen shot for my records
We’ve really got to attend better to our own mental and emotional hygiene. It’s better to be in their faces about it and watch them make asses of themselves as they always do.
I will confess that I am part of one group of people Pacelli portrays his opposers as: an exotic pet supporter. No, I do not support the keeping of just any animal (preference be it limited to captive-bred animals). However, I find it interesting that part of Wayne Pacelli’s manipulation game when it comes to demonizing such pet owners is implying that dogs and cats have never killed or injured anyone or have never proven invasive, neither of which are true at all!
Wayne looks stupid when he demonizes pet owners. Then again, he looks stupid when his mouth is open and he is talking.
Lately I’ve seen more than one AR fanatic making the zoophile/bestialist comment. Leadership from the top down? I agree with several commenters, that is CLASSIC projection. It’s not the animal welfare side that consistently overidentifies with animals in inappropriate ways. It’s the animal rights fanatics who cannot tell there’s a difference between themselves and other species, and who have proclaimed themselves so akin to animals that they can read their minds and “speak for them”.

My Goodness, He’s “losing it.” Seemingly, he believes that making rude comments and nasty lies will pile a high protective wall around his money maker.
Spread the word everyone: Give of your time and money locally. For your support of your local humane societies, in addition to seeing your money and efforts go to rescue and adoption, you will get to see and hear HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle call you immoral… Priceless.
