How You Can Actually Help Pets In Need

According to the HandsOn Network, this week is “National Volunteer Week 2010.” I think it’s a good reminder that, along with pointing out the (truthful) flaws in how the Humane Society of the United States conducts itself, we should all be setting the bar pretty high ourselves.

More than ever, you can help out pet shelters—either with your time, or by donating resources to those who are involved in hands-on care. (For what it’s worth, our editor gives to a couple local shelters in the DC area and one in Michigan.)

The HandsOn Network keeps a database of places that need help with animals. We also recommend Pets911, which you can use to find a local humane society or SPCA near you. Or good ol’ Google always works.

Feel free to post other suggestions in the comments below, or over on the Facebook page.
